Big Weights for LEWT Sandusky Event
The Western Basin Sportfishing Association (WBSA) and Lake Erie Walleye Trail (LEWT) held the third event of the 2009 Starcraft Marine, Crown Battery LEWT tournament series Saturday May 9th at the Sandusky City ramp.
Topping the list of big weights to come to the scales was the team of Scott Geitgey of Canton and Joe Nazdam of North Royalton with a weight of 39.72 lbs. Less then 1 pound behind them with 38.97 lbs for their 5 walleye was Shane Solomey of Wheatfield IN and Mike Solomey of DeMotte IN. In third was Mike Miller of Brunswick and Jason Kopf of Avon Lake with a basket weighing 38.45 lbs. Rounding out the top 5 was Tom Sibert of Castalia and Thomas Sibert of Sandusky with 34.71 lbs and Ken Coffman of Nova and Bob Kitts of Ashland with 33.21 lbs.
Geitgey and Nazdam also cashed in on the Starcraft Contingency money since they were fishing out of a 210 Super Fisherman model. They earned $250 from Starcraft and an additional $250 from LEWT sponsor Vics Sports Center which is where the boat was purchased from. Geitgey commented “It pays to be friends and fish with guys that run Starcrafts” in reference to using Joe’s boat for the event.
The race for the Team of the Year is starting to take shape but is still wide open. Currently there is a tie at the top of the points with the team of Mike Zaborsky and Charlie Robinson in a dead heat with Mark Brumbaugh and Jim Stedke. In addition to winning the title teams are fighting for the chance to earn a berth to the AIM Championship. The WBSA is now a Cabelas National Team Championship (NTC) qualifying circuit and will be sending its top teams to the 2010 NTC.
In the Cranberry Creek Marina Big Fish award race the team of Geitgey and Nazdam took top spot there also with a walleye weighing 10.01 lbs to complete a very good pay day for themselves. In addition to the cash prize they also took home a free ramp pass and gift certificates to Cranberry Creek Marina. Finishing a close second was the team of Miller and Kopf with a fish weighing 9.96 lbs.
The 47 teams brought 215 fish to the scales that averaged 5.21 lbs. There were teams fishing from west of the islands to Lorain and from 12 to 48 foot of water. The east side of Kelly’s Island was the most mentioned spot by the anglers. Spinners, crankbaits and spoons all produce money winning catches. The winners were pulling spinners with orange and chartreuse beads and chartreuse blades for their big fish NE of Kelly’s Island. The Green Springs Fire Department took fish donations to be used for their fish fry in the winter and those fish were cleaned by Balboa Fish Cleaning.
The remaining 2009 schedule is as follows:
June 27 – Geneva – “Migration Open” (Blow Date June 28 )
July 25 – Championship Sheffield Lake – Sheffield Lake City Ramp (Blow Date July 26)
